How Tour Operators Can Add Moraine Lake to Canadian Rockies Tours

Planning Canadian Rockies tours for next season? Lake Louise, the Icefields Parkway and the Columbia Icefield are fixtures of almost every escorted Rockies itinerary. Moraine Lake — arguably the most photographed lake in Canada — is often missing, or sold only as an optional extra. This guide is for tour operators, product managers and DMCs who want to add it (and a few other Banff highlights) back into their Canadian Rockies tours.

Why Moraine Lake drops out of Rockies itineraries

  • Restricted road access. Moraine Lake Road has been closed to personal vehicles since 2023. Only Parks Canada shuttles and licensed commercial operators can drive it.
  • Coach logistics. Parking for full-size coaches at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake is tight, and congestion builds quickly from mid-morning.
  • Short season. The road is typically open only from early June to mid-October, so shoulder-season departures can’t rely on it.
  • Fixed schedules. On a Calgary–Banff–Jasper routing, it is simpler to stop at Lake Louise and continue up the Icefields Parkway.

The result: guests see the famous Valley of the Ten Peaks on brochures and social media, then discover it isn’t on their trip. That gap is an easy upsell — or an easy way to differentiate your product.

Three ways to add Moraine Lake to your Rockies program

1. Use the leisure day in Banff

Most escorted Rockies itineraries include two or three nights in Banff with a free day. A 4.5-hour Moraine Lake & Lake Louise shuttle from Banff fits neatly into that day, with guests back in town for lunch or the hot springs.

2. Sell it as an optional excursion

Your tour director offers it; we operate it. We can run dedicated departures for your group from your Banff hotel, sized to the number of guests who sign up.

3. Build it into premium and private programs

For luxury, small-group and FIT programs, our private Moraine Lake & Lake Louise tour includes hotel pickup and flexible timing, including early starts for better light and fewer crowds.
